Learn about the different models of Raspberry Pi and their support for 5GHz WiFi.

  • Raspberry Pi 4 (Standard Model): The standard Raspberry Pi 4 model comes with an onboard 802.11n wireless LAN controller that supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. This means it can connect to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks. To verify if your Raspberry Pi 4 is connecting to a 5GHz network, you can use the iwconfig command in the terminal:
$ iwconfig wlan0

This will show information about the wireless connection, including the frequency it’s connected at. If it shows “Frequency:5.24GHz” or something similar, then your Raspberry Pi 4 is connected to a 5GHz network.

  • Raspberry Pi 4 Compute Module 4 (CM4): The CM4 model only has an onboard 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN controller that supports the 2.4GHz frequency band. This means it can connect to 2.4GHz WiFi networks but not 5GHz networks. Attempting to connect to a 5GHz network will result in connection errors or no connection at all.

In summary, if you have a standard Raspberry Pi 4 model, then yes, it does support 5GHz WiFi. If you have a CM4 model, however, it only supports 2.4GHz WiFi. It’s important to check which model you have before trying to connect to a 5GHz network, as attempting to do so with the CM4 will not work.
