Raspberry Pi is a popular single-board computer used for various projects including home automation, media centers, and IoT applications. One important aspect of managing any device is monitoring its performance, especially when running multiple processes or programs simultaneously. In this article, we’ll learn how to check the CPU usage on Raspberry Pi using some simple commands and tools. This will help us understand which processes are consuming the most resources and optimize our system for better performance.

Checking CPU Usage with Top Command

The top command is a useful tool that displays the current running tasks and system resource utilization on Raspberry Pi. It provides real-time information about the processes running on your device, including CPU usage, memory consumption, and other relevant metrics. To run it, simply open a terminal window and type:

top

This will display a list of processes sorted by their current CPU usage. The top row shows general system information, while the rest of the screen displays each process with its PID (Process ID), user, CPU%, MEM%, VSZ (virtual memory size), RSS (resident set size), TTY (terminal type), STAT (process state), START (start time), TIME+ (cumulative CPU time), and COMMAND.

Press q to exit the top command or h for help on additional options.

If you’re using a graphical user interface on your Raspberry Pi, you can also check CPU usage through the system monitor. Open the menu and navigate to Accessories > System Tools > System Monitor or search for “System Monitor” in the application launcher.

In the System Monitor window, click on the Performance tab to see real-time data about your device’s CPU usage, memory consumption, network activity, and other metrics. You can also select specific processes to view their resource utilization and even kill them if needed.

Checking CPU Usage with htop Command

The htop command is an alternative to the standard top command that provides more comprehensive information about your Raspberry Pi’s resources. It offers a color-coded display of processes, sorted by CPU and memory usage, along with additional details like read/write accesses, I/O usage, and process priorities.

To install htop, run the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install htop

Then, launch htop by typing:

htop

Use arrow keys to navigate and press F1 for help on additional options. Press q or Esc to exit the program.

Optimizing CPU Usage

Now that we know how to check CPU usage on Raspberry Pi, let’s discuss some ways to optimize performance:

  • Limit background processes: Close any unnecessary applications running in the background, especially if they’re resource-intensive. You can use top or htop to identify these processes and kill them if necessary.

  • Increase swap space: If your Raspberry Pi is running out of RAM, consider adding more swap space to your system. This will allow the operating system to store less frequently used memory pages on the SD card, freeing up physical RAM for other processes. To add swap space, edit the /etc/dphys-swapfile file and increase the CONF_SWAPSIZE value (e.g., CONF_SWAPSIZE=1024). Then, run sudo dphys-swapfile setup && sudo dphys-swapfile swapon.

  • Upgrade your Raspberry Pi: If your device is running the latest version of Raspbian or another operating system, it’s possible that updates and improvements have been made to the kernel and system libraries that can increase performance. Check for available updates using sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade.

  • Use lightweight alternatives: For resource-intensive tasks like video streaming or gaming, consider using more efficient software alternatives or lighter versions of existing applications.

By monitoring your Raspberry Pi’s CPU usage and following these optimization tips, you can keep your device running smoothly and efficiently. Remember to regularly check for updates and new tools that may further improve your system’s performance.
