Learn how to check your Raspberry Pi’s Kali Linux version, and why it is important to know.

Kali Linux is a popular operating system for penetration testing and security professionals. If you are running Kali Linux on your Raspberry Pi, it’s essential to keep track of the version you are using. Here’s how to check your Raspberry Pi Kali Linux version:

  1. Open a terminal window by clicking on the “Menu” icon in the upper-left corner and selecting “Terminal.” Alternatively, press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal directly.
  2. Type uname -a into the terminal and hit Enter. This command will display information about your operating system, including the kernel version and release date. For example:
    Linux raspberrypi 5.10.63-v7+ #1403 SMP Mon Aug 23 18:11:52 BST 2021 armv7l GNU/Linux

In this example, the Kali Linux version is 5.10.63-v7. The v7 indicates that it’s based on Raspbian (the official Raspberry Pi operating system), which means it’s compatible with the Raspberry Pi’s architecture.

  3. To check your Raspberry Pi’s hardware information, type cat /proc/cpuinfo and hit Enter. This will display details about your processor, memory, and other components:
    processor : 0
    model name : ARMv7 Processor rev 5 (v7l)
    BogoMIPS : 38.40
Features : half thumb fastmult vfp edsp neon vfpv3 tls vfpv4 idiva idivt vfpd32 lpae evtstrm crc32
    CPU implementer : 0x41
    CPU architecture: 7
    CPU variant : 0x0
    CPU part : 0xd08
    CPU revision : 5

    Hardware : BCM2835
    Revision : a020d3
    Serial : 0000000001b76eaf7c

  4. To confirm that you’re running Kali Linux, type lsb_release -a and hit Enter:
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Kali
    Description: Kali GNU/Linux Rolling
    Release: 2021.3
    Codename: kali-rolling

In this example, the Kali Linux version is 2021.3. This information will be useful if you need to look up specific documentation or troubleshoot issues related to your Raspberry Pi’s Kali Linux setup.

  5. If you want to check for updates and potential security patches, run sudo apt update followed by sudo apt upgrade. This command will retrieve the latest package lists from the repositories and install any available upgrades.

Knowing your Raspberry Pi’s Kali Linux version is crucial for maintaining a secure and stable system, as well as accessing relevant documentation and support resources. By following these steps, you can easily check your current setup and ensure that everything is up-to-date.
